1873-CC

Hub Combo: Type 1/1

This is the second most difficult Carson City date. They do not become available often. All examples have obverse one and reverse one. There is little public price data but attractively chopped coins likely trade near par with non-chopped coins.

Variety: Mispunched Date

There are two mispunched dates. While neither can be called common, as the entire date is very scarce, these will appear on a fairly high percentage of coins. One has the top of a 7 clearly visible in the denticles while another has the tops of both 8 and 7. Some of these were paired with the Very Wide CC reverse.

Variety: Very Wide CC

For some reason, this reverse die was held back and used sparingly from 1873-1876 until it was retired, as all 1877-1878 coins utilized the type 2 reverse. The speculation is that the mint personnel were told to exhaust any remaining type 1 reverse dies which would explain the greater population of the 76 issue versus the other three. No one knows why this particular die was used across four years as no other die was used in more than two. The 73-CC is either the second or third rarest of the four, along with the 74-CC as the other of the second or third.
